The impact on digital forensics practitioners
While iOS releases bring exciting new features to end users, these updates can also add to the challenges faced by examiners who need to access and extract critical data from mobile devices involved in their criminal and corporate investigations.
Chris Vance, Magnet Forensics’ Senior Technical Forensics Specialist, hosted a special episode of Mobile Unpacked detailing the changes and additions in iOS 26 that could impact forensic investigations:

Mobile Unpacked S3:E9 // NOW That’s what I call iOS: 26
Apple has hit the jump to light speed and jumped from iOS 18 to iOS 26! In this episode of Mobile Unpacked we’ll explore the new changes and challenges Apple’s yearly upgrade cycle is bringing to the table. We’ll explore the overall UX changes of “Liquid Glass” and see if it impacts anything we’ve come to use in our daily forensic lives. We will also explore some of the changes to the Phone and Messages app that could have some serious core impacts to our favorite go-to artifacts.
Apple iOS 26 adoption
iOS updates have historically seen fast adoption rates and with a range of new capabilities and flashy user-interface features, we can expect to start seeing Apple devices with iOS 26 showing up in investigations very quickly.
Apple’s most recent reporting on iOS adoption was as of June 4, 2025, which showed that 82% of all iPhones were running iOS 18—the iOS version prior to iOS 26—with the number jumping to 88% of all iPhones produced in the last four years.
There are an estimated 1.56 billion+ iPhone users worldwide. iPhone use is especially high in North America, with approximately 61% of the US population reported to be using iPhones. iOS devices consistently show up in high profile cases, so we know how important being able to access the latest Apple operating system is for the agencies that rely on our mobile solutions.
Critical access to mobile devices
